2022 Nebbiolo Release

In the past, Simon Grant may have been considered the Fool of Red Hill, but today, gazing out from his kitchen window, he witnesses the sun setting over his vast vineyard of over a thousand Nebbiolo vines. We believe he is well on his way to earning the title of the King of the Hill.

Situated at the base of the Victorian Alps, the historic goldrush town of Beechworth is renowned for its elegant Chardonnay and Syrah, thanks to notable vintners like Rick Kinzbrunner of Giaconda, Julian of Castagna, and Adrian of A. Rodda. However, after years in the wine trade and developing a passion for Piedmont's Nebbiolo in Northern Italy, Simon Grant concluded that the red decomposed shale and mudstone soil of his Red Hill vineyard, perched 600 meters above Beechworth, was the ideal terroir for cultivating this grape variety, responsible for the esteemed Barolo. Fortunately, he wasn't alone in deviating from the production of the renowned Beechworth Chardonnay and Shiraz; coincidentally, Rick Kinzbrunner of Giaconda was also cultivating Nebbiolo on Red Hill, just beyond the fence!

It was the structural qualities of wine that captivated Simon, along with his partner Helen Murray, as they sought a place to create wine, accompanied by their now winemaking-daughter Phoebe. Originally planning to grow and produce wines from Italy's Nebbiolo, Spain's Tempranillo, and France's Cabernet Sauvignon, Simon and Helen now focus their efforts on Nebbiolo.

The Traviarti flagship Nebbiolo embodies all the expected tannins of this noble grape. Many of the industry all agree Simon produces Australia best example of the variety and with each year there are more converts.

For those seeking the velvet touch of Nebbiolo without its characteristic iron fist, Simon cultivates a bit of Barbera to complement his Nebbiolo in the Traviarti Rosso. Crafted for immediate enjoyment, this wine reveals notes of anise nestled in juicy black fruits. And, of course, there's his Chardonnay—it's Beechworth, after all. The terroir and winemaking expertise deliver power, texture, balance, and, of course, structure. - Pete L
